A rose by any other name, smells as sweet

You may have noticed that I have yet to actually say the names of any of my family so far in any of my posts. I can't decide. (My inability to make decisions is a topic for another post...)

In my sister's blog, http://www.mamagingertree.blogspot.com/, she doesn't use her family's real names. They are all named after characters from the Candy Land game. I am Jolly the sister over there.

I've heard that it might be better to use pet names, or just initials, for safety reasons. I've also heard that it's really not that big of a deal, and it's probably alright to just use their real names. I can't decide.

Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

I am in the no real names camp. But mostly for my kids. I did however hand out business cards at BlogHer with my real name as well as my kids real names. So I guess I am a little wishy-washy on the subject.

My husband prefers his name be left out since he does not want anyone to do a google search on him and end up at my blog. For the same reason, I won't put my kids real names on my blog.

I don't mind if people I get to know and trust know our real names. Probably not really helpful, just my 2 cents.

I use initials, which keeps them them safely un googleable (is thata word?) and me sane.

I don't use real names, either. I refer to them as "daughter" "son" "husband." Creative, I know. But I did use my dead dog's real name.

I use initials too. I don't know that real names are a big deal - I've thought about switching back because the initials annoy me. I love their names. But, I don't want to cause them any grief ever, so I've gone with initials just in case.

My kids have what I think are unique names and I'm proud of the names we chose. But I have caught myself calling them by their blog names.

I use real names. have been doing so since 2004, too.

that being said... I also really filter WHAT I put on/write about on my blog. by nature I'm a pretty open book, so I usually tell it how it is, but I will not use names of people who do not blog, I do not trash talk anyone specificly (wait.. does Mariah Carey count?? cause I really do like to trash her)

and definitely the work thing. I wouldn't write anything that would incrimiante or otherwise come back to bite me or my husband.

I don't have any hard rule on it. When I e-mail fellow bloggers I refer to husband and daughter by their names, but when I'm posting or commenting I use their initials.

I LOVE that I could totally out so many of the people who've commented because I know their personal information...but, of course, I wouldn't do that. At least on purpose.

I use our real names simply because I KNOW I'd never be able to keep up with it. I tried fake names when I first started blogging but felt stupid doing it, so I quit it. I don't advertise my last name, but I don't really hide it either.

I get the reasons for doing it both ways, so I guess it's whatever is easier for you! How's that for wishy-washy?

And when are you going to join AllMediocre? :0)

I say go with whatever you're most comfortable with, and what you think the people you'll write about will be most comfortable having you do.

I use my first name but no last name...but if I leave an email address, it has my last name. I don't use my family's real names because they don't like it, but it's hard to remember the nickname sometimes. I don't have kids, though, and that's a whole other kettle of fish.
