Night Owl

I love the night.

Tonight, I've been to an evening yoga class, had an hour long phone conversation in my car with my best friend while watching the boats gently bobbing in their dark ocean dock, came home, caught up on emails, did the dishes, made lunches for tomorrow and showered. Sounds like time for bed, right? Not yet...I'm still relishing in the quiet of the night.

I made myself a cup of hot cocoa and sat down to write this post. Out the windows, the calm blackness of night surrounds me. The only light in the room is the dim glow of one side table lamp and my computer screen. There are no sounds, except for a snoring dog and the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen. The night feels soft and comforting. I think more clearly at night, without the distractions and expectations that the daytime brings.

Last night, Seesa woke up with stomach pains. I was still awake, watching TV and working on my laptop. I gave her something to calm her stomach and had her sit with me awhile. I wanted to be sure there wasn't something more serious going on, but I also wanted to share the middle of the night with her. It reminded me of when I was a child, and I would wake up feeling sick. I'd crawl into bed in the middle of my Mom and Dad and listen to the late night television program they were watching, and eavesdrop on their conversation while I pretended to fall back asleep. At this time in my life when I'm examining a lot of the dysfunction of my childhood, it's nice to remember a time like that with fondness.

I'm right up with you.
Tonight I'm really thinking that I should go to bed because my boys have been sick for the last week and a half and I still have no idea how many hours of sleep I'll average per night, but, at the same time I'm relishing having that quiet time to myself.
Cheers to you!

That is a lovely memory. It's funny how so often our fondest childhood memories aren't of DISNEY! FUN! but the stolen, totally unmarketable moments.

You never know when a certain memory will be triggered. Keep discovering those fond memories. I try to find those special places in time for me too.

I used to love late nights...but dam I can't do it anymore. Some cute little monkey likes to rise with the sun. ;)

i like the middle-of-the-night visits too. Just her (or her) and me.

I often stay up late because there is something I have to finish or because sleeping seems like a waste of time. I really should appreciate those quiet moments more often :-)

I WISH I was more of a night owl. I'm pathetic, actually. I have to drink an espresso if I want to have a social life...or a dating life!
Everyone needs a time when life softens and things are seemingly more peaceful.
Be well, Kari.

In the midst of all the dysfunction, a beautiful pearl was created.

I'm a night owl with a dysfunctional family too! I'm up at least 3 hours after everyone (including my husband) goes to sleep. Makes mornings rough, but the quiet is worth it.

What a cool memory you created Mommy. Plus, I think when parents do that for their kids they instill into them how important they are in your life. Sleep is optional..they are #1. Good job.
Funny story. My blog just turned 2 (that's like, 20 in Blog Years!) and was looking back at some of my very first posts and comments. And guess who I saw..YOU! You were one of my very first followers/commenter :) That's cool. "Pop by" when you have a moment. my blog is "all growd up" now...or..getting there anyway. Cheers!

I love and NEED my late nights. Since I have teens who are up quite late my me-time gets pushed even further into the night. Loved reading about your own childhood memories and how you created a nice one for your daughter.

Just found your blog via Lish... I'm from the Bay Area and am happy to have found you!

I have been experiencing a LOT of that revisiting of my childhood as well. I don't know if it's my age, or the age of my children, but a lot is starting to surface. Sometimes it's crushing, other times it's really enlightening. I haven't really talked about it to anyone but my mother because i'm still trying to figure out where it's coming from, but it's very interesting!

Anyway, I'm happy to have found you. Following now :)

I love these little things we give our kids, gifts we didn't know our parents gave us. I love the night too, mostly because the house is so quiet.
