I miss my kids

I'm a Mom with a job outside my home. I don't like to say that I'm a "working Mom", because I think that ALL Moms WORK. Inside the home, outside the home, whatever. If you are a Mom, you are a working Mom! I wish there was a better term.

Lately, I've been working outside my home a lot more than I'd like. I was assigned this big (thankfully short term) project at work. It was quite possibly the worst timing ever, since it started just as my husband was leaving for a long business trip. Since he's been back, I've been putting in a few more hours inside the office to catch up.

I miss my kids.

Thankfully, we've got a vacation coming up and I am so looking forward to our time together. I hope my girls read my blog later in life, and know that Mommy really misses them when I'm at work.

A rose by any other name, smells as sweet

You may have noticed that I have yet to actually say the names of any of my family so far in any of my posts. I can't decide. (My inability to make decisions is a topic for another post...)

In my sister's blog,, she doesn't use her family's real names. They are all named after characters from the Candy Land game. I am Jolly the sister over there.

I've heard that it might be better to use pet names, or just initials, for safety reasons. I've also heard that it's really not that big of a deal, and it's probably alright to just use their real names. I can't decide.

Thoughts? Comments? Ideas?

The good, the bad and the ugly

The Good: Hubby came home from long business trip - so happy!!!

The Bad: Hubby came home from long business trip - transition back into the "routine" has been a bit hard on everyone.

The Good: We decided to go camping this weekend with hubby's best friend and his son (our Godson). Kids had a great time playing together, weather was great, roasting marshmallows over an open fire - need I say more?

The Bad: We decided to go camping this weekend. Packing, unpacking, sleep deprived kids and parents - need I say more?

The Ugly: Ok, here's where I'm going to get a little naked. Apparently, in "blogese", that means that you write uncensored. Yes, already. It's only my fourth post! Don't take this as an indication of how quickly I'll get naked in other situations...ok? Anyhoo - the ugly is that in a moment of pure exhaustion at the end of the weekend, I lost it with my oldest daughter, who was NOT listening to me, and I screamed at her in a very non "positive discipline" sort of way. I feel like such a crappy Mom when I lose my patience with my kids. I never hit them or anything (although admittedly, sometimes I want to!), but it makes me worried that I'm going to drive them to therapy later in life.

One of the things that keeps me going though, is something that Kate - from Jon & Kate plus 8 (love that show) said on Oprah (love that show) about being a Mom. Whenever you have a bad Mom day, you always wake up the next day with an opportunity to do it differently. I should cut myself a break. After my freak out, she and I took a little nap together - because the heavens were shining on me, and the little one was sleeping too. So, I guess there is forgiveness.

Why is my hair so wet?

My husband got a new job in June, and has been traveling pretty much ever since. For the past couple weeks, he's been in London. On top of being a single working Mom while he is away - I've had this project at work that is really intense and really high exposure. This has meant that I've had to cut out a few things like, sleep.

Last night, the girls spent the night at their baby sitter's, to give me a little break - and probably them too. It's like a vacation for them, and I think it took their minds off of Daddy not being home. Unfortunately, it wasn't spa day for Mommy - I worked late again, but at least not past midnight.

When I woke up this morning, I decided to take a shower. Now we're talking spa day for Mommy... When I got out, I dried off, put mousse in my hair and started blow drying. My hair would NOT dry. I thought, wow - maybe I'm not used to my hair being this wet, because I usually take a shower in the evening and let my hair dry naturally a bit before blowing it dry. Sadly, it took me quite a few minutes to figure out that I had put my facial soap in my hair, instead of mousse! What the??? In my defense, my facial soap dispenses in a foam, like my mousse. So, I got two showers this morning.

I'm really clean today. And really exhausted.

Good to know...

So, I added this super cute picture of my girls to my new (yet to be customized) blogsite, and called my sister to share my excitement. She informed me that many people in the blogsphere feel that it's not appropriate to post a picture of your children in the bath - something about it being an invasion of thier privacy. In other words, they don't take kindly to your kind in these parts.

Ok. Good to know. Any other blogging rules I should be aware of?

By the way, I'm keeping this so cute picture up for now for five reasons. 1) Come on. You have to admit, it's adorable! 2) They are both smiling at the same time, which is rarely caught on camera, 3) Bathtime is one of my favorite times spent with my kids - hey, there's another idea for a blog post 4) I don't have time to find a new picture - more on that in an upcoming blog about how exhausted I am these days, and 5) no one is really reading this thing yet anyway.

UPDATE... Note to the pervs who keep finding my blog while searching for pictures of girls in a bath: Put it back in your pants, and get the hell off my site!

My first blog

Wow, my first official post on my new blog, "I left my heart at preschool".

I chose this name from my favorite quote about having kids... "To choose to have a child, is to choose to forever watch your heart walk around outside your body."

Let us rise up and be thankful, for if we didn't learn a lot today, at least we learned a little, and if we didn't learn a little, at least we didn't get sick, and if we got sick, at least we didn't die; so, let us all be thankful.

About Me

Hi, welcome to my blog. My name is Kari. My two daughters are known on this blog as "Seesa" (6) and "Milly" (3) - an ode to their nicknames for each other. My husband is known as "my husband", cause I'm clever like that.

The meaning behind the name of my blog comes from the fact that I live and work in the San Francisco Bay Area - a play on the song "I left my heart in San Francisco"; and the quote "to have a child is to forever watch your heart walk outside your body". Every day when I cross the Golden Gate Bridge to work, I leave my "hearts" at home.

My sister, who is also my best friend, inspired me to start this blog. My hope is that someday my kids will read it, and know a little more about who their Mom is.

I love a good quote, so here's some wisdom for you...

Whatever you give a woman, she will make it greater.
If you give her sperm, she'll give you a baby.
If you give her a house, she'll give you a home.
If you give her groceries, she'll give you a meal.
If you give her a smile, she'll give you her heart.
She multiplies and enlarges whatever is given to her.
So, if you give her any crap, be ready to receive a ton of shit.
